Face recognition identifies persons on face images or video frames. In a nutshell, a face recognition system extracts features from an input face image and compares them to the features of labeled faces in a database.
Comparison is based on a feature similarity metric and the label of the most similar database entry is used to label the input image. If the similarity value is below a certain threshold the input image is labeled as unknown. Comparing two face images to determine if they show the same person is known as face verification. This article uses a deep convolutional neural network CNN to extract features from input images.
It follows the approach described in with modifications inspired by the OpenFace project. Face recognition performance is evaluated on a small subset of the LFW dataset which you can replace with your own custom dataset e. After an overview of the CNN architecure and how the model can be trained, it is demonstrated how to:.
The CNN architecture used here is a variant of the inception architecture . More precisely, it is a variant of the NN4 architecture described in and identified as nn4.
Face Recognition with FaceNet in Keras
This article uses a Keras implementation of that model whose definition was taken from the Keras-OpenFace project. These two top layers are referred to as the embedding layer from which the dimensional embedding vectors can be obtained. The complete model is defined in model. A Keras version of the nn4.
Model training aims to learn an embedding of image such that the squared L2 distance between all faces of the same identity is small and the distance between a pair of faces from different identities is large. This can be achieved with a triplet loss that is minimized when the distance between an anchor image and a positive image same identity in embedding space is smaller than the distance between that anchor image and a negative image different identity by at least a margin. This layer calls self.
During training, it is important to select triplets whose positive pairs and negative pairs are hard to discriminate i. Therefore, each training iteration should select a new batch of triplets based on the embeddings learned in the previous iteration. The above code snippet should merely demonstrate how to setup model training. But instead of actually training a model from scratch we will now use a pre-trained model as training from scratch is very expensive and requires huge datasets to achieve good generalization performance.
For example, uses a dataset of M images consisting of about 8M identities. The Keras-OpenFace project converted the weights of the pre-trained nn4. To demonstrate face recognition on a custom dataset, a small subset of the LFW dataset is used. It consists of face images of 10 identities.
The metadata for each image file and identity name are loaded into memory for later processing. The nn4. By using the AlignDlib utility from the OpenFace project this is straightforward:. Embedding vectors can now be calculated by feeding the aligned and scaled images into the pre-trained network.
But we still do not know what distance threshold is the best boundary for making a decision between same identity and different identity.
To find the optimal value forthe face verification performance must be evaluated on a range of distance threshold values. At a given threshold, all possible embedding vector pairs are classified as either same identity or different identity and compared to the ground truth.GitHub is home to over 40 million developers working together to host and review code, manage projects, and build software together.

Design convolutional neural network using Keras d. Train the model on the test model on testing data Convolutional Neural Networks ConvNets or CNNs are a category of Neural Networks that have proven very effective in areas such as image recognition and classification. An Image is a matrix of pixel values. Essentially, every image can be represented as a matrix of pixel values. Channel is a conventional term used to refer to a certain component of an image.
An image from a standard digital camera will have three channels — red, green and blue — one can imagine those as three 2d-matrices stacked over each other one for each coloreach having pixel values in the range 0 to A grayscale image, on the other hand, has just one channel. We will only consider grayscale images, so we will have a single 2d matrix representing an image.
The value of each pixel in the matrix will range from 0 to — zero indicating black and indicating white. The primary purpose of Convolution in case of a ConvNet is to extract features from the input image. Convolution preserves the spatial relationship between pixels by learning image features using small squares of input data.
We will not go into the mathematical details of Convolution here, but will try to understand how it works over images. I will use the VGG-Face model as an example. It is written in Python and is compatible with both Python — 2.
Keras was specifically developed for fast execution of ideas. It has a simple and highly modular interface, which makes it easier to create even complex neural network models. Recently, deep learning convolutional neural networks have surpassed classical methods and are achieving state-of-the-art results on standard face recognition datasets. Although the model can be challenging to implement and resource intensive to train, it can be easily used in standard deep learning libraries such as Keras through the use of freely available pre-trained models and third-party open source libraries.
In this tutorial, you will discover how to develop face recognition systems for face identification and verification using the VGGFace2 deep learning model. Discover how to build models for photo classification, object detection, face recognition, and more in my new computer vision bookwith 30 step-by-step tutorials and full source code. Face recognition is the general task of identifying and verifying people from photographs of their face.
A face recognition system is expected to identify faces present in images and videos automatically. It can operate in either or both of two modes: 1 face verification or authenticationand 2 face identification or recognition.
A contribution of the paper was a description of how to develop a very large training dataset, required to train modern-convolutional-neural-network-based face recognition systems, to compete with the large datasets used to train models at Facebook and Google. To this end we propose a method for collecting face data using knowledge sources available on the web Section 3.
We employ this procedure to build a dataset with over two million faces, and will make this freely available to the research community. This dataset is then used as the basis for developing deep CNNs for face recognition tasks such as face identification and verification. Specifically, models are trained on the very large dataset, then evaluated on benchmark face recognition datasets, demonstrating that the model is effective at generating generalized features from faces.
They describe the process of training a face classifier first that uses a softmax activation function in the output layer to classify faces as people. This layer is then removed so that the output of the network is a vector feature representation of the face, called a face embedding. The model is then further trained, via fine-tuning, in order that the Euclidean distance between vectors generated for the same identity are made smaller and the vectors generated for different identities is made larger.
This is achieved using a triplet loss function. Triplet-loss training aims at learning score vectors that perform well in the final application, i.
A deep convolutional neural network architecture is used in the VGG stylewith blocks of convolutional layers with small kernels and ReLU activations followed by max pooling layers, and the use of fully connected layers in the classifier end of the network. Qiong Cao, et al. They describe VGGFace2 as a much larger dataset that they have collected for the intent of training and evaluating more effective face recognition models.
In this paper, we introduce a new large-scale face dataset named VGGFace2. The dataset contains 3. Remember what l2 normalization is. They also constrained dimensional output embedding to live on the dimensional hyperspace.
This means that element wise should be applied to output and l2 normalized form pair. Researchers also mentioned that they used euclidean distance instead of cosine similarity to find similarity between two vectors. Euclidean distance basically finds distance of two vectors on an euclidean space. Distance should be small for images of same person whereas distance should be large for pictures of different people. Still, we can check cosine similarity between two vectors.
In this case, I got the most successful results when I set the threshold to 0. Notice that l2 normalization skipped for this metric. Well, we designed the model. The important thing how successful designed model is. We can run Google Facenet model in real time as well.
The following video applies facenet to find the vector representations of both images in the database and captured one. OpenCV handles face detection here. Euclidean distance checks the distance between two images. I removed l2 normalization step here because it produces unstable results in real time.
My experiments show that face images have a euclidean distance less than 21 are same if l2 normalization disabled. My experiments also show that l2 normalization disabled euclidean distance is more stable than cosine distance for Facenet model.
You can find the source code for this real time implementation in GitHub. However, it is really important for face recognition tasks. For instance, Google declared that face alignment increases its face recognition model FaceNet from Hereyou can find a detailed tutorial for face alignment in Python within OpenCV.The only difference between them is the last few layers see the code and you'll understand ,but they produce the same result.
